More than two thirds of the world's plants species are found in the rainforest. The plants provide food and shelter for the rainforest animals and they also take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen for us humans to breathe.
Quandongs-
Quandongs are a unique native fruit. They are trees that produce a marble sized, blue/red/green coloured fruit that has a single large seed. These trees also have red leaves and pale-green flowers. The fruit is edible.
There is approximately 60 species in many parts of the world, with roughly half found in Australia. Medicinal Uses- • Form of tea which was drunk as a cleanser • Roots were grounded to use as an infusion for the treatment of rheumatism • Crushed + mixed with saliva to produce an ointment for skin sores and boils Threats- • Low number and low diversity which can limit the sexual reproduction • Land clearing • Habitat disturbance • Frequent fires Fun Facts- • Australians often refer to Quandongs as the Desert Peach, Wild Peach or Native Peach. • Quandongs have a higher content of vitamin C. • The fruit can be frozen for over 8 years and still taste the same. • The trees have an aromatic wood that was traditionally used by Aboriginals in smoking ceremonies. |
